What do you do when no one is watching?

Tonight, I just wanted to go to bed. Hang it all up for the day.

Why? Facebook has changed their rules. I was wondering why I was getting no love. No Likes. Few comments.

then, I found out that Facebook changed their rules. NOW, if you LIKE my page, you also have to HOVER over the “Like” button and request that my updates show up in your feed.

There’s a Catch-22 here. I can’t tell people to do this if they aren’t getting my feeds.

I used to have such lovely conversation with my peeps. We were growing something. It has come to a screeeching halt!

Now, I have to re-think the entire scenario.

Actually, it is probably a good thing – here we are at the start of something GREAT! And I was giving my success to Facebook – something I cannot control.

Still, tonight I wanted to just GO TO BED and not post a thing. But, my PRIOMISE is that I will post every school night – five nights a week. Period. Whether people are watching or not.

So, tonight, being WILDY discouraged (I am just launching the bit.ly/vavavavoomregister interview with the AMAZING Bob Burg). A breakout event … and NO ONE is seeing it.

I am discouraged.

I am posting anyway. Because I will do what I promised. Even when no one is watching.

And that MEANS SOMETHING!

What do YOU do when no one is watching? THOSE are the things that REALLY define you!

Love your amazing self UP!

  1. Why not stop relying on (or minimize reliance on) channels you can’t control and which frequently change rules and policies?

Most marketers have a presence elsewhere (website) and decide to create a Facebook page as an extended presence and channel for their voice. You went in reverse of that, right?

You are a true sales pro, ISG. A top 4-percenter. But this is the world of marketing. Check out the blogs of Eloqua, Hubspot, Marketo and Duct Tape Marketing, for starters, and focus on Inbound / content marketing. Channel people to your blog, website, newsletter and email campaigns. Get conversations going through blog comments, where the SEO and traffic are yours, not Facebook’s.

My late-night perspective… Hope something is helpful. Now, if I could just stop sneezing…

    1. Hi Mike,

It is funny you should say all this. It is EXACTLY what I was thinking as I crawled into bed. WHY IN THE WORLD am I giving control of my business to a free service that can change the rules at any time? Why, they could turn “Pages” off tomorrow and where would I be?

This lesson taught me that I have to be thoughtful about my strategies and do the work of building a foundation that can flourish.

Yes, I did the business backwards! THANK YOU for your help with the technical details!

I also love what you say about Sales v. Marketing. TRUE THAT! Most people don’t get that they are intertwined, but do NOT have the same tenets or skill sets. Marketing is a skill that can be learned and I am LEARNING it! With a lot of help from my friends.

Thanks for taking the time for the long reply, Mike. You’ve got my six!

  2. Now that Sneezy has given you the necessary technical advice, I’ll just add this: You. Are. Not. Allowed. To. Be. Discouraged. Ever! Reread The Devil’s Retirement Story. Here’s a huge hug for you; now go forth and achieve greatness.

    1. Bob,

You and Sneezy are just the BEST! Thanks for the reminder.

I have your voice in my head, “Do the work!” I will do the work of learning all I need to know about marketing my business where my Peeps can find me. Thanks to Phil Gerbyshak – http://www.philgerbyshak.com and Mark Carter – http://www.markjcarter.com and MANY MANY others, I know where to get the education.

Love your peeps UP! I know I do.

  3. Reminds me of an article that discusses Digital Sharecropping.
    http://www.copyblogger.com/digital-sharecropping/

If there’s heavy reliance on things like Facebook for your traffic or engagement, and Facebook goes away (or changes its methods or does something crazy) you’re really a digital sharecropper. Sonia Simone suggests that the answer is to bring activity to your site.

You also remind me of Gini Dietrich of Spin Sucks and Andy Crestodina of Orbit Media. They lead a discussion and what came up was “community.” One way of looking at community and your influence is “what do people say about the brand outside of the brand’s presence?” So, if people don’t leave comments or “like” something, how can you get feedback in another way? I’m stunned when I talk with someone and they remark, “I loved that post about _____ !” WOW! Ok. I had no idea that they were paying attention.

I agree with Bob. There’s no time to be discouraged. Here’s an opportunity to re-examine the tools, objectives and strategy.

    1. Great advice, Oz! I will read up on all the resources you sent.

It is time to own my business! This is an opportunity to re-examine the tools, objectives and strategy. Spot on!

      Love your weekend UP!
